What's worse an alien pet stuck in a saurian toilet?
Conroy has left Earth far behind and taken his hypnosis act beyond Human Space. It should be show business as usual, except for Reggie stuck in a toilet designed for sapient dinosaurs, an unwanted talent agent with a speech impairment granted by its gods in exchange for an encyclopedic knowledge of popular culture on Earth, the energy being the size of a hundred suns that wants to study him, a blackmailer forcing him to smuggle liquid gravity, a troupe of alien sex wrestlers, a hypnotized ghost who can't remember who he really is, and the leader of a planetary cartel that has declared a blood feud against him!
Buffalito Contingency is the exciting sequel to the popular Buffalito Destiny by mutiple Nebula and Hugo award nominee Lawrence M. Schoen
"Fans of old-fashioned SF will love this fast-paced, chaotic, and good-natured adventure full of semi-farcical humor and pleasantly believable aliens." — Publishers Weekly
If you like rollicking, zany science fiction with colorful aliens, inter-species politics, super intelligent entelchies, and extraterrestrial linguistics, then this is the book you've been waiting for. Order your copy today!
Buffalito Contingency The Adventures of the Amazing Conroy Book 2 eBook Lawrence M Schoen
I have to admit that when I first heard the premise of this series - an interstellar performing hypnotist and his alien animal companion, which looks like a miniature buffalo, can eat literally anything, and excretes oxygen instead of poo - I sighed, rolled my eyes, and said "You've got to be frickin' kidding me".Then I read one of the stories. And I was blown away by how good it was.
This novel continues the Adventures of the Amazing Conroy, which started in the anthology Buffalito Buffet and continued in Buffalito Destiny. If you haven't read those books already, I highly recommend doing so before you start this one. There is also a freely-available Nebula-nominated novella "The Trial of the Century", which bridges the events of Buffalito Destiny with those in Buffalito Contingency. Go find it and read it. I'll wait.
Having gone from rags-to-riches-back-to-rags, Conroy takes his hypnotism entertainment show back out on the intergalactic road. But his life can never be that simple: aliens from several different races all want to use him for their own mysterious purposes.
Another human who is as intensely interested as he is in alien cultures appears with a proposition: she's been tasked to take him to meet an alien with deity-like powers - except that it turns out this alien was one who nearly killed Conroy many years before, indirectly triggering the start of his career as a hypnotist. Then another quirky, fast-talking alien persuades Conroy to take him on as a manager/agent - but he may just be a ticket into big trouble. And an avaricious ship captain from yet another alien race blackmails him into serving as a reluctant smuggler in a highly-dangerous scheme.
Once again, Conroy must rely on his psychological powers of suggestion and persuasion to get him out of all these messes, with the help of his buffalito companion Reggie - while still managing to sample many delicious selections of the universe's unique alien cuisine.
The author does a spectacular job of blending richly-developed alien cultures with psychological insights, in a funny, adventurous romp through the stars.

Buffalito Contingency The Adventures of the Amazing Conroy Book 2 eBook Lawrence M Schoen Reviews
In testing and we'll thought out characters. Schoen's universe is unlike anything else out there.but is still fully realized and believable.
Reminded me of Stainless steel rat meets Magnam PI, which probably makes no sense, but still great fun, and I dare you to read it and NOT want a buffalito afterwards!
Lawrence Schoen once again shows his talent to weave a rich, involved story with interesting twists and turns! Long live The Amazing Conroy and his buffalito Reggie!
Imaginative universe filled with imaginative characters.
This a light airy entertainment. A whole delightful universe with diverse aliens. It reminds me is Shakespeare's comedies. The hero, a talented rogue with a really neat pet overcomes impossible odds, earns the eternal hatred of two species, a spaceship and gets closer to the girl.
The Amazing Conroy stories work so well as short stories, I don't know why the author has the urge to write novels. This book is full of individual ideas --If a person is killed while under hypnosis, will the ghost be hypnotized? Since buffalitos are completely opaque to spaceport luggage scanners, can they be used for smuggling? What does a hypnotist wear on stage at an alien planet? -- each of which would make an entertaining short story. None of them are big enough to support a whole novel. Put all those ideas together, and the result is a disjointed muddle.
There are far too many unlikable minor characters. I got tired of the self-appointed agent, and his speech defect, after about a chapter. The whole point of an Amazing Conroy story is that it is fun reading, and this book was consistently just not fun.
Mr. Schoen continues the story of the Amazing Conroy and his buffalito companion, Reggie. He now has an agent and a gathers a group of friends around him that help him out of several jams and grow as a person. This was a great story that had a few surprising twists that I didn't see coming and left me wondering how Conroy was getting out of this jam each time.
The book is written with an nice pace that didn't leave me wishing he would get on with the story and I never felt that any of the new characters were introduced just for the sake of writing. They all had a purpose to the story and by the end of the book I felt invested in them. I am hoping to see where Schoen takes this now that we have a purpose for Conroy and what may be a thread that can be woven throughout the series.
My one regret? I didn't feel like Reggie was given as much time as he has in the past. He really felt like a side prop for some of the scenes and never really another character in this story.
